Frequently asked questions.

How do I measure my dog for a jumper?

To measure the neck, use a soft tape measure to measure the girth of their neck just below their head (not their lower neck). To measure the chest, wrap around the tape measure around the widest part of their chest, just underneath the pits of their forelegs. To measure the back length, simply start at the base of their neck, to a few centimetres off the tail (we do not aim for jumpers to reach the tail as this hinders the style of the jumper). Please reach out via Instagram (@TheSalvatorePaws) or by Email (Hello@TheSalvatorePaws.com) if you require any further assistance, we are always happy to help.

What size dog jumper should I buy?

We offer a size chart for each individual jumper and collection, as sizing may slightly differ based on the fabric and knitting pattern.

How do I wash a dog jumper?

All our jumpers are designed with comfort, quality, style, and practicality in mind, and are machine washable in cold water on a gentle cycle. As with any high-quality item, please avoid using a dryer.

What are the benefits of dog jumpers?

Dog jumpers provide warmth in cold weather, protect against wind chill, and keep dogs comfortable—especially those with short fur, small breeds, or older dogs with arthritis. Other benefits include:

  • Promoting a sense of security (a hugging effect).

  •  Our jumpers’ necks can be unfolded to cover your dog’s ears during fireworks, muffling the noise.

  • On muddy days, a jumper can save you from giving your dog a full bath when you get home!

Are dog jumpers necessary for all dogs?

Not all dogs need jumpers. Breeds with short hair, small dogs, older dogs, and rescue dogs may benefit from extra warmth in cold weather. Thick-coated breeds might not need one, although looking stylish is always a great incentive!

What if my dog doesn't like wearing a jumper?

Introduce the jumper gradually, offering treats and praise. Let your dog wear it for short periods, increasing the duration as they become more comfortable. It's best to introduce jumpers when your dog is a puppy, though we know that’s not always possible.

How do I know if my dog is comfortable in a jumper?

It can be tricky at first. Dogs new to jumpers might hesitate to move, which can seem like discomfort. Our three Chihuahuas freeze initially, but they won’t leave the house in winter without a jumper! You know your dog best—watch for signs like scratching or reluctance to move. To ensure comfort, place two fingers under the sleeves to check there’s enough room. For dogs who are hesitant, we recommend starting with our fluffy collections, which are so soft and lightweight, they’re like a second skin.

Can I use a jumper to keep my dog clean during walks?

Absolutely! Using a jumper can be a great way to keep your dog’s body clean during walks, helping to minimize the need for frequent baths. Since dogs generally only need to be bathed every 4-6 weeks, a jumper can help keep dirt at bay, so you only need to clean their paws after a walk.

What should I do if my dog chews on his jumper?

If your dog chews on their jumper, providing chew toys, keeping furniture out of reach, and focusing on training can help. It's also important to address any underlying issues, like teething or anxiety, which may be contributing to this behaviour.

Are the jumpers comfortable for my dog to run in?

Yes, our jumpers are crafted with soft, natural materials, ensuring both comfort and practicality. Every detail is carefully considered to allow your dog to move freely and comfortably, even during active play.

How do I get my dog used to wearing a jumper?

Start by letting your dog sniff and explore the jumper. Gradually put it on them for short periods, rewarding them with treats and praise to create a positive association. Like with lead, collar, and harness training, it’s best to start early, though we know this isn’t always possible.

Can dog jumpers be worn under a harness?

Yes, our dog jumpers are designed to be worn with a harness on top, ensuring maximum comfort and freedom of movement.

Jumpers are making my dog’s fur mat; how can I prevent this?

To avoid matting, opt for natural materials like cotton or wool. While fleece is practical, it’s known for causing matting due to its lack of breathability. Choosing the right material will help maintain your dog’s fluffy coat.

Can jumpers help dogs with anxiety?

Yes, jumpers can be beneficial for dogs with anxiety as they provide a comforting, hugged feeling. However, it’s crucial that the jumper fits snugly without being too tight. Our roll neck design can also unfold to cover your dog’s ears, which can help muffle sounds during stressful events like fireworks.

I have a puppy—how do I know which size jumper to choose?

Starting jumper training as early as 7-8 weeks is ideal! If your puppy is the size of a full-grown Chihuahua, our size small is a great fit. However, it’s best to refer to our size charts for an overview of fit based on your puppy’s breed, season, and age.

What materials are best for dog jumpers?

Natural materials are ideal for both dog and human jumpers. If it’s good for us, it’s good for them! Wool offers warmth but requires more care. Fleece is soft and lightweight, but can cause matting (a groomer’s nightmare). Cotton is breathable, comfortable, lightweight, and easy to wash—perfect for walks where things can get messy. That’s why we believe cotton is the best choice for dog jumpers.

Can dogs wear jumpers indoors?

Yes, dogs can wear jumpers indoors if your home is cold, but monitor them to avoid overheating. Remove the jumper if your dog appears too warm.

How tight should a dog jumper be?

A dog jumper should be snug but not tight. It should allow your dog to move freely without restriction. You should be able to fit two fingers between the jumper and your dog’s body, as well as under the sleeves. Our jumpers are designed to fit snugly, and we avoid big jumps between sizes to ensure this.

How do I put on a dog jumper?

Our dog jumpers are designed to go over the head, with the front legs slipping through the leg holes. We recommend stretching the neck and gathering the jumper inward before slipping it over your dog’s head for an easy fit.

Can I leave my dog unsupervised in a jumper?

It's best not to leave your dog unsupervised while wearing a jumper, especially if they are not used to it. There’s a risk of the jumper getting caught on something or the dog becoming uncomfortable.

Are dog jumpers safe for puppies?

Yes, as long as the jumper is appropriately sized and doesn’t restrict movement or cause overheating. Our size small is designed for full-grown Chihuahuas, so if your puppy is about that size, a small should fit perfectly.

Can dog jumpers cause skin irritation?

Some dogs may have sensitive skin or allergies to certain materials. If you notice redness, itching, or discomfort, remove the jumper and consult your vet. We primarily use cotton because it’s breathable, soft, and unlikely to cause irritation.

 Are your dog jumpers waterproof?

Our fluffy nylon jumpers are water-resistant but not waterproof, making them perfect for light showers.

What styles of dog jumpers are available?

Our dog jumpers are inspired by Parisian fashion, hence, the bulk of our collections tends to be roll necks. However, we do offer a crew-neck option with The Crew.

Do dog jumpers have special features?

Our jumpers are designed with ultimate comfort, quality, and style in mind, focusing on simplicity. While our Houndstooth jumper features gold buttons, we primarily emphasize prints, embroidery, and unique colorways.
